plenty of interest nowadays in what is called by various terms, the media, journalism. the press, etc, etc.
does no one grasp what's going on? readership of newspapers continues a steady decline. so what's new? I can remember all the way back to when the NY Herald was a good paper but it went away. AP & UP news svc merged. down down down. no one notices that TV is a money pot, so why news? they can whipsaw the public back & forth at campaign time, and the money pours in from both sides for political ads. why have a news service? Dan Rather going? no one really cares.
Rupe Murdock has the key & we just pump more $$ into his pockets. doesn't anyone wonder why the head guy at Gannett invested $6 mill to get USA going? People love 3 days worth of news for the price of one, & can tell the difference.
I love the quote yrs ago by the former Sec. of Commerce during Carters admin who presided over the deregulation of the airlines ( which is today even a bigger disaster than when he made the remark) who, when asked if he still thought the de-reg was a good idea, said, 'yes, but who could have predicted the abandonment of the anti-trust laws?'
how quaint. anti-trust laws?
