news for spring in the southern Appalachians. elev. 2500 ft. today May 2, bluebirds in our front yd. box are busy sort of, female is v.likely laying eggs. haven't checked the box yet this yr, but last yr on May 9, they had 5 eggs. A walk nearby---saw my 1st pink ladyslipper in bloom all by itself among a cluster of others in leaf. the glorious scent of silverbell is beginning. iris are mostly in full bloom, saw my 1st swarm of bees about 2 wks ago, a small swarm, maybe 2 pounds, not far off the ground, maybe 3-4 ft.
